Commune viticole de 150 habitants environ détentrice de plusieurs labels :
« Les plus beaux villages de France »
Association créée en 1982. Marque privée donnant une visibilité reconnue pour le tourisme. Il existe plusieurs critères d’adhésion (moins de 2000 habitants, avoir au minimum 2 sites classés aux monuments historiques…).
« Cités de caractère de Bourgogne Franche-Comté »
Association française fondée en 1989. Ses objectifs sont de valoriser le patrimoine, améliorer le cadre de vie des habitants, offrir un accueil de caractère aux touristes.
Château-Chalon dans l’émission « village préféré des Français » de Stéphane BERN est mis à l’honneur en 2014.

Des femmes au pouvoir :
Au VIIème siècle, l’abbaye de Château-Chalon est construite pour une vingtaine de sœurs. Elles deviendront au fil du temps des Dames de la haute noblesse.
L’abbesse aura un pouvoir prépondérant dans la vie de tous les jours.
Les bénédictines sont à l’origine du Vin Jaune. Ce sont elles qui ont planté les premiers pieds de SAVAGNIN (cépage du vin jaune).
Cette cité viticole s’est développée durant la période Gallo-romaine. Il s’agissait de remparts naturels grâce aux nombreuses falaises abruptes. Au IXème siècle, un château-fort est érigé.
Au XIIIème siècle, le comte JEAN Ier de CHALON (d’où le nom du village) fait construire dans le Jura châteaux-forts et fortifications.
Suite aux nombreuses guerres du XVIème siècle, le château sera définitivement détruit. Après la révolution française, les ruines de l’abbaye sont confisquées comme bien naturel. Les vestiges diront utilisés comme matériaux de construction pour le village.
Bernard CLAVEL à Château-Chalon.
Ecrivain romancier Français (1923-2010), il s’installe dans le village en 1970. Il reçoit le prix Goncourt en 1968.
Il est inhumé à Frontenay, non loin du village.

Women in power :
In the 7th century, the Abbey of Château-Chalon was built for around twenty sisters. Over time, they will become Ladies of the High Nobility. The abbess will have a preponderant power in everyday life. The Benedictines are at the origin of the Yellow wine.They are the ones who planted the first plants of SAVAGNIN (yellow winegrape).
This wine-growing city-state developed itself during the Gallo-Roman period. They were natural ramparts thanks to the many steep cliffs. In the 9th century, a fortified castle was erected. In the 13th century, Count JEAN Ier de CHALON (hence the name of the village) had castles and fortifications built in the Jura.
Following the numerous wars of the 16th century, the castle will be definitively destroyed. After the French revolution, the ruins of the abbey were confiscated as natural property. The remains will be used as building materials for the village.
Bernard CLAVEL in Château-Chalon.
French novelist and writer (1923-2010), he moved to the village in 1970. He received the Goncourt prize in 1968. He was buried in Frontenay, not far from the village. Known for his novels such as: »The Spanish » 1959″Malataverne » 1960.

Stichting opgericht in 1982. Privé label die en erkende zichtbaarheid voor het toerisme geeft. Er zijn verschillende criteria nodig (minder dan 2000 inwoners, minimaal 2 plaatsen geklasseerd als historisch monument…).
“ Bijzondere plaatsen van Bourgogne Franche-Comté” :
Franse stichting opgericht in 1989 die zich inzet in het valoriseren van het erfgoed,de verbetering van de inwoners leefomgeving, en een warm en authentiek welkom te bieden aan de toeristen.

Vrouwen aan de macht :
In de 7e eeuw werd de abdij van Château-Chalon gebouwd voor een twintigtal zusters. Zij werden na verloop van tijd dames van de hoge adel.
De abdis had een overheersende macht in het dagelijkse leven.
De Benedictijner nonnen liggen aan de oorsprong van de gele wijn. Zij hebben de eerste wijnstokken van SAVAGNIN (druivensoort van de gele wijn) geplant.
Deze wijnstad ontwikkelde zich al tijdens de Gallo-Romeinse periode. Het was een natuurlijke verdediging dankzij de vele steile kliffen. In de 9e eeuw werd een burcht gebouwd.
In de 13e eeuw liet graaf JEAN I de CHALON (vandaar de naam van het dorp) in de hele Jura velen kastelen en vestingwerken bouwen.
Na de verschillende oorlogen in de 16e eeuw werd het kasteel definitief vernield. Na de Franse revolutie werden de ruïnes van de abdij geconfisqueerd als natuurlijk eigendom. De resten werden gebruikt als bouwmateriaal voor het dorp.
